With the midterm elections approaching, Senator Tommy Tuberville directed his rhetoric toward the furry community during a Capitol address.
In a nearly 20-minute speech that disseminated misinformation regarding transgender individuals and advocated for the reinstatement of mental institutions as “a normal part of our society,” Tuberville asserted without evidence that furries “tout the fact that… many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community.” He offered no substantiation for this claim.
“Lord help us! It’s terrifying when you think about this,” Tuberville exclaimed. “When you walk onto a commercial flight, it’s possible that the pilot flying your plane could have a deranged fetish of dressing up like an animal. You can’t make this up.”
The Alabama senator and former college football coach is currently campaigning for governor in the November general election. He is not the first Republican to fixate on the furry fandom as a component of a broader anti-transgender agenda aimed at restricting LGBTQ rights.
Numerous GOP figures have propagated misconceptions about furries—a widely misunderstood and stigmatized subculture—to vilify the LGBTQ community. In 2022, the debunked claim that students were requesting litter boxes in classrooms became a staple talking point among right-wing politicians.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones responded to Tuberville’s Senate floor remarks. “My only comment is that was the strangest speech on the floor of the United States Senate that I have ever heard,” Jones stated.
