Senator Lindsey Graham, Veteran Republican and Trump Ally, Passes Away After Sudden Illness

Senator Lindsey Graham died on Saturday evening after a brief, sudden illness, according to a statement from his office’s communications director posted on social media early Sunday.

The 71‑year‑old was a prominent Republican senator representing South Carolina.

Early in his career Graham criticized President Donald Trump, but he later became one of the president’s most steadfast allies in Congress.

“Senator Graham’s family thanked everyone for their prayers and requested privacy during this extraordinarily difficult time,” his office said.

He won election to the U.S. Senate in 2002, having previously served in the House of Representatives from 1994, representing South Carolina’s third congressional district, per his website.

Described as a defense hawk, his website noted that he consistently advocated for War on Terror policies aimed at safeguarding long‑term national security.
