Seven individuals, among them two police officers, were killed in a crash near Middlesbrough during the early Saturday hours, according to Cleveland Police.
The police regulator has confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the collision.
The incident occurred on the A66 in South Bank, North Yorkshire, in the early hours of Saturday, as reported by local authorities.
At approximately 3:39 a.m., a police vehicle collided with a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 in South Bank, a Cleveland Police spokesperson stated.
The collision has resulted in multiple fatalities, with numerous emergency vehicles present and the road expected to remain closed for an extended period.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is overseeing the investigation, said that Cleveland Police officers had observed a suspicious vehicle, initiated a pursuit, and that the vehicle proceeded onto the A66 before striking a police car at 3:39 a.m.
The watchdog added that investigators have been dispatched to examine the evidence and are collaborating with police to determine the collision’s circumstances. The investigation was initiated on Saturday following a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police.
The North East Ambulance Service reported being called to a two‑vehicle crash and deploying 14 units, comprising ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a hazardous area response team, and a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
A spokesperson said, “Despite the best efforts of everyone on scene, several patients tragically died.”

Police said they are working to identify the victims and notify their families, describing the incident as rapidly evolving. The A66 remains closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane in Eston.
