Seven Iraqi Politicians Detained in Corruption Probe Targeting Former Oil Official]

Iraqi security forces arrested seven political figures, including five members of parliament, in anti-corruption raids conducted overnight, according to state media.

The detentions followed allegations linked to former Oil Ministry official Adnan al-Jumaili, who was detained previously. Authorities also moved to remove parliamentary immunity from several lawmakers, state-run Iraqi News Agency reported.

Special operations sealed off access to Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone early Sunday as raids unfolded inside the compound housing government buildings and foreign embassies.

The arrests are concentrated around the political bloc of former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, whose party won the most parliamentary seats in November elections but ultimately ceded power after failing to secure the premiership within Iran-aligned Shiite coalition the Coordination Framework.

Al-Sudani was succeeded by Ali al-Zaidi, a pro-Western businessman and political novice who received U.S. backing.

The detentions are poised to intensify scrutiny on Iraq’s volatile political landscape, where corruption allegations frequently intersect with entrenched power struggles.
