Severe Speedboat Tragedy Off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island Claims Indian and Vietnamese Lives

Hon May Rut Ngoai, situated about 10 km (six miles) south of Phu Quoc—Vietnam’s largest island—was the site of the disaster.

Nguyen Tien Hai, a senior Communist Party official in the region, said authorities were still working to confirm the exact death toll and identify survivors.

Citing Hai, VnExpress reported that heavy winds and high waves likely caused the speedboat to capsize.

Hai stressed that the top priority is rescue operations, bringing all victims ashore and focusing all efforts on emergency medical care for those still alive.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the boat accident involving Indian nationals in Vietnam. He extended sincere condolences to the families who lost loved ones and prayed for the early recovery of the injured survivors, sharing his remarks on X (formerly Twitter).

The Indian embassy in Vietnam described the incident as “tragic” and released a list of all 32 Indian nationals who were aboard the capsized vessel. The embassy has set up telephone hotlines to provide information and assistance to the families affected.
