A male diver in his 30s died after being bitten by a shark while spearfishing with his family near Michaelmas Island, off Albany, Western Australia.
Police confirmed the 35‑year‑old was pronounced dead after more than two hours of on‑scene treatment by paramedics.
Emergency services responded to reports of a possible shark attack on Saturday morning. The victim was brought ashore by boat, but paramedics were unable to revive him.
The Department of Primary Industries identified the attacker as a suspected 4.5‑metre shark, with the incident occurring just before 11:30 a.m. AWST.
St John Ambulance reported that multiple paramedic crews remained at the scene throughout the day.
Authorities advised the public to exercise heightened caution in the Michaelmas Island area and to follow any beach closures issued by park rangers or surf lifesavers.
The department is coordinating with police and other local agencies in response to the incident.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
