Pakistan cricket faces renewed scrutiny as former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has publicly questioned the legitimacy of Babar Azam’s “superstar” reputation ahead of the team’s upcoming Test tour to the West Indies. With Pakistan preparing for a pivotal series in the Caribbean, Akhtar’s critique has sparked fresh debates over the captain’s capacity to deliver match-defining performances under pressure.

Akhtar emphasized that individual skill alone does not justify superstar status, arguing that Babar’s role as captain demands consistent results that elevate the team. He highlighted the batsman’s recent struggles, which have coincided with Pakistan’s inconsistent form, questioning whether Azam can rise to the occasion when stakes are highest. “You have made a superstar out of a player who cannot win you a game,” Akhtar remarked in an interview cited by NDTV.

Despite acknowledging signs of improvement in Azam’s recent outings, Akhtar stressed that sustained excellence and decisive leadership are critical for regaining elite status. He called for the captain to prioritize team outcomes over personal milestones, particularly in high-pressure scenarios.

Recent Form and Upcoming Series

Babar’s recent performances offer cautious optimism. In the two-Test series against Bangladesh, he scored 115 runs across two matches, posting a top score of 68 and averaging 57.50. His form continued in the ODI series against Australia, where he accumulated 125 runs in three matches, including a 69-run knock, finishing with an average of 41.66. While these figures show renewed consistency, expectations remain elevated given his role as both captain and key batsman.

The West Indies Test series, running from July 25 to August 6 in Trinidad and Tobago, presents an immediate opportunity for Babar to address his critics. The subsequent three-Test tour of England from August 19 to September 13 will further test his leadership and batting resilience, as both series are poised to shape Pakistan’s international standing in the longer format.
