Former India wicket‑keeper Saba Karim has urged Shreyas Iyer to begin asserting his authority as India’s T20I captain after England’s dominant nine‑wicket win in the fourth match at Bristol sealed the series.
During an appearance on JioHotstar’s Match Centre Live, Karim noted that Iyer’s tactical acumen in the IPL has兑 yet to translate to the international arena, and he called for adjustments to India’s batting order ahead of the final encounter.
Saba Karim: Shreyas Iyer Must Forge a Distinct Captaincy Identity
Karim pointed out that while Iyer has displayed strong strategic awareness while leading IPL teams, he has yet to replicate that success on the international stage.
“It’s time for Shreyas Iyer to step up as a captain. The tactical leadership we’ve seen from him in the IPL hasn’t yet manifested in international cricket,” Karim said on JioHotstar.
He questioned India’s batting order during the chase, specifically the decision to send Shivam Dube ahead of Tilak Varma.
“When Iyer was batting in the middle, Shivam Dube was promoted to number five, and I couldn’t understand that decision. That is not the Shreyas Iyer we know from the IPL. Logically, if he were captaining in the IPL right now, Ars would have placed Tilak Varma at number five instead of Shivam Dube,” Karim remarked.Karim also backed Iyer’s leadership potential, citing his unbeaten 80 at Bristol.
“The most encouraging aspect is that he was able to score runs with the bat. That provides a captain with significant confidence. I want him to create his own identity. He’s ready for it—now is the moment to do so,” Karim added.
‘India Are Playing Like They’re on Home Pitches’
Kar_When also criticized India’s struggle to adapt to English conditions, noting that the batting unit continued to pursue high‑risk shots despite England’s clear plans.
“You need to read the opposition’s bowling plans. If you don’t, the results won’t favour you. That was precisely what transpired with the Indian batters,” he said.
He highlighted Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue’s persistent use of the short ball, and observed that India failed to rotate the strike during the Powerplay.
“This Indian team is not adapting to English conditions. We’re still playing as if we’re on pitches with small boundaries. That is not how a World Cup‑winning team plays,” Karim said.
Sanju Samson Should Return for Fifth T20I, Says Karim
Looking ahead to the final match of the series, Karim advocated for Sanju Samson’s inclusion in the playing XI to bring balance to India’s middle order.
“India needs a right‑handed batsman in the middle order, and Sanju Samson is the only viable optionაი. To break the chain of left‑handers, you need an experienced right‑handed batter—there is no better, choice than Sanju,” he said.

Parthiv Patel Blames Poor Planning for Batting Collapse
Former India wicket‑keeper Parthiv Patel echoed Karim’s concerns, stating that India’s downfall stemmed more from improper shot selection than from technical deficiencies.
“The biggest change we made to our T20 cricket in 2022 was our intent. Skill has never been an issue with these players,” Patel said on JioHotstar.
“If the ball isn’t there to play the pull shot, you simply can’t play it. You’re playing across the line, which is poor shot selection. Hence, it all boils down to a lack of planning. England have been the better team, both in terms of planning and execution,” he added.
IPL Impact Player Rule Hitting India, Says Patel
Patel also argued that the pokies impact player rule in the IPL has hampered the development of genuine pace‑bowling all‑rounders, leaving India overly reliant on Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.
“For the past ten years, we’ve been reiterating the same message—everything will be fine when Jasprit Bumrah makes his return. Things will be fine again when Hardik Pandya returns,” Patel said.
“The primary reason behind that is the IPL’s Impact Player rule, and India will not be able to find the all‑rounder they need until that rule is abolished,” he concluded.
