Shubman Gill’s Fitness Concern Prompts Srikkanth to Suggest Ishan Kishan as ODI Replacement

India captain Shubman Gill’s fitness has become the focal point ahead of the second ODI against England, following his retirement hurt during the opening match at Edgbaston. While early reports indicate the issue was heat‑induced muscle cramping rather than a serious injury, the Indian team management has yet to confirm whether Gill will be fit for the next game.

Gill looked in complete control while chasing 259 runs in the first ODI, anchoring the innings with a fluent 80 off 75 deliveries. The right‑handed batter mixed elegant stroke play with aggressive intent and seemed destined for a century before an unfortunate injury curtailed his stay. The incident occurred on the fourth ball of the 26th over against England pacer Josh Tongue. After attempting a shot, Gill displayed immediate discomfort, removed his gloves, crouched on the pitch and clutched his right leg and calf. The Indian physio rushed in, but despite treatment, he could not continue and limped off retired hurt, leaving a question mark over his availability for the rest of the series.

Kris Srikkanth picks the replacement of Gill

If Gill is ruled out, former India opener Kris Srikkanth believes the side should give Ishan Kishan an opportunity rather than seek an outsider. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the 1983 World Cup winner and former selector said Kishan is the most straightforward choice within the squad. He also suggested promoting KL Rahul to open the batting, freeing Kishan to strengthen the middle order.

Srikkanth added that Yashasvi Jaiswal’s recent ODI form would have made him a strong contender under different circumstances, but the tight schedule leaves India with little time to bring in a replacement from outside the touring squad. “Ishan Kishan is the obvious replacement for Gill. It is unfortunate that Jaiswal isn’t in the squad despite scoring two centuries in his last three ODI innings. I would bring Kishan in for Gill but open with KL Rahul. Ishan Kishan should come in the middle‑order. The turnaround is too quick for India to draft Jaiswal into the squad,” Srikkanth said.
