Sick Of It All frontman Lou Koller dies aged 59 after two-year cancer battle

The leader and co-founder of the influential New York hardcore band Sick Of It All, Lou Koller, passed away at 59 following a two-year struggle with esophageal cancer.

The band announced his death on July 24, 2026, through an Instagram statement. Koller had been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a type of esophageal cancer, in 2024. A heartfelt tribute described the loss as “unbelievable” and emphasized his irreplaceable role in the hardcore community.

“It’s with profound sorrow that we share the passing of our brother Lou Koller,” the band wrote. “The depth of our grief is immeasurable.” They highlighted his unwavering dedication to Sick Of It All, noting the band would have celebrated its 40th anniversary that year. Known for his commanding stage presence and sharp wit, Koller connected with audiences worldwide through his performances.

The band expressed gratitude to fans who supported Koller’s medical fund during his illness, stating, “You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved.” They added, “His battle is over now, and he can finally rest. May he continue to see the lasting impact he made on the world.”

Koller first revealed his diagnosis in June 2024, leading Sick Of It All to cancel European tour dates for treatment. He shared: “A tumor was found in my esophagus, and I’ll be undergoing treatment this summer.” The band fully supported his health priorities. In May 2025, he was declared cancer-free after surgery and chemotherapy, but the disease returned four months later. In a July 2026 message, he wrote, “The cancer has come back. And he brought some friends with him.”

Koller co-founded Sick Of It All in Queens, New York, in 1986 with guitarist Pete Koller and drummer Armand Majidi. The band became a cornerstone of the city’s hardcore scene, performing at iconic venues like CBGB and releasing their debut EP through Revelation Records in 1987. Notable albums include 1989’s *Blood, Sweat And No Tears*, 1992’s *Just Look Around*, 1994’s *Scratch The Surface*, and 1997’s *Built To Last*. Their 2018 album *Wake The Sleeping Dragon!* marked their latest release before Koller’s passing.
