Diego Simeone addressed the media to clarify his earlier remarks following accusations that he had implicitly endorsed the hostile treatment directed at Julian Alvarez by portions of Atletico Madrid’s supporters.
“I want to complete the thought I began at my previous press conference, where I expressed my respect for the fans. That respect is unwavering, but I do not condone insults or abusive behavior. At this time, any statement can fuel division and create uncertainty,” Simeone stated during a press conference.
The controversy originated during Atletico’s LaLiga opener against Malaga, when Alvarez was left out of the matchday squad due to not being fully fit, and did not attend the game to support his teammates.
Certain sections of the fanbase voiced their displeasure through chants targeting the absent forward during the 2-0 victory, and Simeone’s initial comment—merely stating his respect for the fans—was widely interpreted as aligning with them rather than supporting his player.
Prior to concluding the briefing, Simeone confirmed that Alvarez will be part of the squad for Sunday’s match against Villarreal. “Yes, he will be in the squad. He is now in better physical condition,” the manager said, potentially marking Alvarez’s first competitive minutes since the World Cup amidst the ongoing controversy.
