Solana Reward Records Lack Validator Fee Data, Creating Verification Gap
Solana staking payouts remain visible while validator fees become increasingly difficult to verify. The Agave protocol leaves the commission-rate field empty in reward metadata when custom collectors are active, requiring fee verification to rely on both historical validator state and the SOL received.
An Oct. 30 report by staking provider P2P.org indicated that commission records vanished from both voting and staking rewards starting September 8. The report confirmed that commissions continued to be applied while reward amounts were still reconciled. The core issue lies in the lack of payment evidence rather than an actual shortfall.
As a staking and reporting provider, P2P.org has a commercial interest in this issue.
The change was explicitly implemented in Agave pull request #12588, which merged on May 20. The PR renders the commission field empty once the custom-collector feature is activated, affecting both accumulated validator commission rewards and individual stake rewards. It describes outward-facing reward payloads utilized by block queries and subscription services.
The PR’s rationale is that aggregated rewards can combine income directed to collectors, rendering a single commission rate unsuitable for those sums. The implementation also suppresses the rate for individual stake rewards, eliminating a convenient piece of evidence even when a holder reviews a single stake account.
Historical commission processing matters because Solana delays the impact of rate updates across reward periods known as epochs. Under the SIMD-0249 protocol, the standard workflow for rewards earned in epoch E involves capturing the rate at the start of epoch E−1, earning rewards during epoch E, and then calculating those rewards at the start of epoch E+1. New vote accounts include fallback mechanisms to later states when earlier account history is unavailable.
The timing separates the rate visible in a validator’s latest account state from the rate relevant to a particular reward period. Using the newest setting to explain an older payout can select the wrong input.
