Authorities confirm seven attackers boarded the MT Astana, a Tanzanian-flagged vessel, 65 nautical miles from Yemen. The hijacking occurred as the ship traveled toward Puntland’s Bosaso port.
The perpetrators, traced to a remote area near Garacad, executed the seizure amid reduced maritime security in the Gulf of Aden region.
Analysts attribute the incident to inadequate surveillance compared to the more heavily monitored Indian Ocean, where EU anti-piracy forces operate.
Puntland security personnel highlight the Gulf of Aden’s vulnerability, suggesting it may become a focal point for pirate operations.
