Niamh Holland produced a career‑best 92 to steer Somerset to a two‑wicket victory over Essex, ending a losing streak and preserving the team’s slim chance of reaching Finals Day in the Vitality Blast.
The 21‑year‑old all‑rounder, who featured in England A’s recent 50‑over series against India, remained unbeaten after a late wobble. Her knock of 92 from 54 balls proved decisive as Somerset chased down Essex’s total at Chelmsford.
Essex entered the match needing a win to keep their own qualification hopes alive. After Grace Scrivens (73 from 51 balls) and Sophia Smale (43 from 29) put them on 142‑1, the hosts appeared to be in control. However, three wickets fell in quick succession, with Somerset seamer Erin Vukusic claiming 3‑31 to restrict Essex to 177‑5.
Anneke Bosch, who had starred for Essex earlier in the tournament, made 18 from 11 before being dismissed by a slower ball from Vukusic. Scrivens continued to dominate the scoring, hitting several boundaries and also clearing the rope to bring up her half‑century.
Somerset struggled to take early wickets, with both Maddie Russell and Sophie Luff spilling catches behind square. Essex’s partnership of 99 from 60 balls, powered by Smale’s innovative stroke‑play, threatened to set a larger total.
The momentum shifted when Vukusic took a hat‑trick of sorts: she dismissed Smale, followed by spinner Chloe Skelton removing Scrivens and Liberty Heap in successive deliveries. Essex’s run rate slipped, and they fell short of a 200‑run target.
In the chase, Sophie Munro sparked a resurgence with a first‑ball outswinger to dismiss Bex Odgers, and later removed Luff after a dramatic juggling act by Bryony Gillgrass. Abi Learoyd contributed 35 from 23 balls, though she was later bowled by Eva Gray.
Holland then took over, hitting three consecutive boundaries to bring her score to 17 in a single over and ease Somerset’s required run rate. A crisp four off Smale propelled her to a 28‑ball half‑century, but the innings faced pressure as Esmae MacGregor’s 4‑26 claimed four wickets.
With seven runs needed from the final over, MacGregor could not hold back the run flow. Holland reached the winning two runs, sealing a tense victory for Somerset.
