A man has been charged with murder for stabbing Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick actor James Handy, who was dating the suspect’s mother.
Michael Gledhill, 44, was charged on Friday after police discovered the 81‑year‑old Handy stabbed in the chest and found unconscious outside a Los Angeles home on Wednesday. Handy was hospitalized and subsequently pronounced dead.
Gledhill did not attend the Friday afternoon arraignment at Los Angeles Superior Court, and no plea was entered.
Javier Trincado, Gledhill’s attorney, said his client was unable to assist with his defense and told the judge that the sheriff’s department had not transported Gledhill to court, without providing a reason.
Superior Court Judge John Reid ordered that Gledhill be transferred to mental health court for psychological evaluations, with another judge to determine his competence for trial.
Authorities said Gledhill was arrested after telling police he was the suspect they sought. Police responded to the residence after a 911 caller reported, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin,” according to the department.
