CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — South Africa handed New Zealand their first defeat of the year by 33-26, leveling their four-test series at 1-1 during Saturday’s match at Cape Town Stadium.
The Springboks scored all three first-half tries to establish a commanding 24-14 halftime lead, maintaining control through Cheslin Kolbe’s flawless goal-kicking and four penalties. Kolbe was named man of the match after converting every kick attempt in the series.
New Zealand’s four tries failed to offset their struggles against South Africa’s intense rush defense, particularly in physical confrontations at breakdowns and lineouts.
The Springboks’ dominance in set-piece situations proved decisive, with lineout mauls generating two tries and scrum-half disruptions neutralizing three attacking throws by the All Blacks via Eben Etzebeth’s defensive pressure.
The series now shifts to Johannesburg for the decisive third test next Saturday.
