Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the third and final Test between South Africa and Australia after sustaining a groin injury during the second match in Gqeberha. The Proteas have named an otherwise unchanged squad for the series decider, set to begin on October 27 at Newlands in Cape Town. With the three-match series locked at 1-1, South Africa will seek to build on their convincing victory in the decisive encounter.

Anrich Nortje Suffers Groin Injury in Gqeberha

Nortje picked up the injury during the opening innings of the second Test and was able to bowl only 3.3 overs before leaving the field. The fast bowler did not return to the match, casting doubt over his fitness for the final fixture.

While the injury has been characterized as mild, it is serious enough to keep him out of the Cape Town Test. His absence represents a setback for South Africa’s pace-bowling resources, particularly given his capacity to generate express pace and unsettle batters with his aggressive approach.

Nevertheless, Nortje’s early departure did not stop the hosts from delivering a dominant display in Gqeberha. South Africa recorded an innings-and-31-run victory to level the series after Australia had seized the lead in the opening Test. The result sets up a compelling finale, with both sides determined to end the series on a high note.

Three Pacers in Contention to Replace Nortje

Nortje’s unavailability leaves South Africa with a selection dilemma ahead of the series decider. Corbin Bosch, Gerald Coetzee and Dane Paterson are among the candidates who could feature in the playing XI if the team management chooses to maintain a four-pronged seam attack.

Each option offers distinct advantages for captain Temba Bavuma and the coaching staff as they evaluate the conditions at Newlands. The final combination will likely hinge on the pitch, the level of assistance available to fast bowlers, and the balance required to counter Australia’s batting lineup.

South Africa also have seasoned left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj at their disposal. Maharaj was omitted from the second Test in Gqeberha, where Simon Harmer was retained as the sole specialist spinner. His selection could come into play if the management believes the Cape Town surface will provide sufficient turn for a slow bowler.

Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne has kept his place in the squad as the backup option behind Ryan Rickelton. Verreynne was left out of the second Test after Rickelton assumed wicketkeeping responsibilities and shifted down the batting order.

South Africa Prepare for Series Decider in Cape Town

With the series evenly poised, the third Test at Newlands from October 27 to 31 promises to be a major contest for both teams. South Africa will look to capitalize on their commanding performance in Gqeberha, while Australia will be determined to rebound after a heavy defeat.

Nortje’s absence forces South Africa to decide on their bowling attack, but the hosts still have multiple alternatives at hand. With the contest between the two sides finely balanced, the final Test will determine which team claims bragging rights at the end of the series.

South Africa squad for the third Test: Temba Bavuma (captain), Marques Ackerman, David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Gerald Coetzee, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Kyle Verreynne.
