South African Rand Gains Momentum Ahead of U.S. Inflation Data
The South African rand rose slightly against major currencies in the forex market on Wednesday, supported by resilient domestic sentiment despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
However, gains remain limited by the strong U.S. dollar as market participants await the upcoming U.S. inflation report, according to a brief from First National Bank (FNB).
Analysts note that the inflation figure will offer insight into the Federal Reserve’s monetary‑policy trajectory for the remainder of the year.
First National Bank reported that the rand was trading at 16.46 per US dollar, 18.45 per euro and 21.83 per pound.
Uncertainty in global commodity markets kept oil prices high, while precious‑metal prices continue to adjust to market conditions.
Brent crude rose to $106.19 a barrel after recent losses, as escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels heightened concerns over Middle‑East supply disruptions.
Attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure and tanker routes through the Strait of Hormuz supported prices, offsetting expectations that increased Russian diesel exports could ease global fuel pressures.
Gold held near $4,159 per ounce, maintaining recent declines as investors await the U.S. inflation data.
Anticipated further policy tightening, rising Middle‑East tensions and broader global growth risks flagged by the IMF continue to influence sentiment in safe‑haven markets. Money Market Rates Dip as Financial System Liquidity Tops N4trn
