[Southwest Airlines Revamps Loyalty Program with New Status Levels and Unlimited Companion Passes]
Stuart Varney and Ashley Webster explain the growing trend of younger travelers arriving well ahead of departure times, and highlight the increased reliance on credit‑card perks to enjoy complimentary terminal amenities, meals, and high‑speed Wi‑Fi.
Southwest Airlines is fundamentally reshaping its loyalty ecosystem by introducing an upper‑tier Platinum status that offers unlimited Companion Pass trips, alongside upgraded earning and redemptions for members pursuing higher tiers.
Effective January 1 2027, the carrier’s existing A‑List designation will downgrade to Silver, A‑List Preferred will rise to Gold, and a brand‑new Platinum tier will sit atop the former two levels, according to a Thursday press release.
Platinum members unlock unlimited Companion Pass privileges, enabling them to bring a selected travel companion aboard any Southwest‑operated flight.
As subscribers move closer to Platinum, further rewards become available; for instance, Rapid Rewards credit‑card qualifiers earn one Tier Qualifying Point for every dollar spent on eligible purchases, while members positioned between Gold and Platinum accrue three Companion Pass trips per qualifying period.
In addition to evolving status rules, Southwest expands rapid pathway access for credit‑card holders. Beginning in January, Rapid Rewards cardholders will accrue one Tier Qualifying Point per dollar spent on approved expenses, accelerating route eligibility and point accumulation.
The loyalty program also extends deeper into ancillary spending. From Spring 2027 onward, members will earn and redeem Rapid Rewards points for travel through new partnerships with Icelandair, China Airlines, and Etihad Airways. Later in the year, travelers can allocate points toward seat upgrades, including Extra Legroom and Preferred seats on Southwest flights.
Beyond the core upgrade, the airline is rolling out additional conveniences that complement the program. Members gaining access to rental‑car booking programs will be able to redeem points starting November 2026. Across the board, these enhancements reflect Southwest’s broader commitment to delivering richer premium experiences at scale.
Southwest will also inaugurate its inaugural network of Airport Icon Lounges in late 2027, launched in partnership with Chase and available exclusively with the forthcoming premium credit card. Entry is restricted to elite cardholders who qualify for the program.
While other industry developments—such as reduced capacity announcements due to rising jet fuel costs, transportation‑policy updates regarding Spirit Airlines employees, and app download invitations—occupy surrounding sections, this article centers on Southwest’s concrete passenger benefits as outlined above.
