Speculation is intensifying regarding whether pop icon Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce will wed at New York City’s Madison Square Garden over the July 4th holiday weekend, following confirmation from city officials that a street closure permit has been requested in the vicinity.
Dora Pekec, a spokesperson for the mayor’s office, informed the BBC that a permit was submitted in early June to close roads surrounding Madison Square Garden between July 2 and July 4.
The New York Times first broke the news regarding the permit, noting that several of Kelce’s teammates from the Kansas City Chiefs have already secured hotel accommodations nearby.
Since the couple announced their engagement in August, fans have been searching for clues regarding the venue for the high-profile wedding. While Pekec did not disclose who filed the permit, CNN reported that neither Swift nor Kelce is explicitly named on the application.
However, further reports from The New York Times suggest that Amtrak police officers—responsible for security at Penn Station beneath the arena—have been alerted to anticipate a Swift-related event during the holiday weekend. Sources suggest the itinerary includes an intimate gathering of 100 guests on July 2, followed by a larger celebration on July 3, which may include live performances.
The choice of venue has surprised many followers, many of whom imagined a more picturesque outdoor setting, such as the singer’s coastal estate in Rhode Island. This is particularly striking given that the couple’s engagement photos featured a romantic, flower-filled garden setting.
In contrast, Madison Square Garden is a windowless, 19,500-seat arena in Midtown Manhattan, offering little in the way of natural light or scenic vistas.
Molly Gaffney, a fan from Albany, New York, expressed confusion over the choice. “Her getting married in Manhattan at all—let alone during the Fourth of July, during America 250, plus the World Cup—is insanity,” Gaffney remarked, citing the overlapping festivities of the U.S. semi-quincentennial and FIFA World Cup matches.
With the city preparing for numerous large-scale events to mark the nation’s 250th birthday, some fans remain skeptical of the venue. “This dark, industrial location as her wedding venue couldn’t be more perplexing,” Gaffney added.
