Scorecard
England’s exit from the 50-over tri-series in Pakistan was confirmed after the host nation suffered a comprehensive defeat to Sri Lanka in Lahore.
With three losses already to their name, Matthew Potter’s side required Pakistan to overcome Sri Lanka in order to keep their slim hopes of reaching the final alive.
However, that scenario became impossible when Pakistan collapsed to 110 all out, allowing Sri Lanka to chase down their target with ease in just 18.1 overs.
While conditions will differ markedly at next year’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa, this early departure represents a setback for England, who had shown renewed vigor in their ODI campaign earlier this year.
Following their disappointing World Cup defense in 2023 and goalless Champions Trophy performance the previous year, England had recorded wins in Sri Lanka and at home against both India and Sri Lanka in 2026.
Their time in Pakistan has been turbulent, featuring a failed pursuit of 303 despite a promising start at 120-1, followed by two remarkable defeats.
Most recently, they could not defend a massive 430 total as Sri Lanka executed the second-highest successful run-chase in ODI history. Three days later, a dramatic last-wicket partnership of 89 delivered an unexpected victory for Pakistan.
Following the conclusion of the tournament on Thursday, England departs for Australia, where they will contest three ODIs and five T20Is beginning on 13 November.
Their preparations include a practice fixture against a Western Australia XI on Saturday, 7 November in Perth.
For Sri Lanka, left-arm bowler Dilshan Madushanka showcased his prowess ahead of the final on Saturday, taking figures of 5-34 against Pakistan.
The hosts struggled with consistent wicket-taking throughout their innings, with captain Babar Azam providing the lone bright spot with 29 runs.
Opening the batting, Kamindu Mendis anchored the chase with a decisive 62 not out from 60 deliveries, ensuring a swift and commanding victory for his team.
