India’s Fast-Bowling All-Rounder Rana Returns to Strengthen Competeive Squad Ahead of Final ODI
India will enter the third and decisive ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai with a renewed sense of momentum, having clinched the series after victories at Dharamsala and Lucknow. Although the contest is already settled, the competition for spots remains open, with captain Shubman Gill aiming to solidify the squad ahead of a potential 3-0 series sweep. The final match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on June 20 will test the team’s readiness for upcoming challenges, including the 2027 ODI World Cup preparations.
Star Pacer Harshit Rana Completes Comeback After 4-Month Injury Recovery
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on June 19 that 24-year-old pacer Harshit Rana has rejoined India’s squad following a successful rehabilitation period at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Rana, who missed the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year due to a knee injury sustained during a warm-up match against South Africa on February 4, is now available for selection. His return comes just weeks after being named in squads for T20Is against England and Ireland, as well as the Asian Games in Japan.
Rana’s absence has been significant, with former India pacer Mohammed Siraj stepping into his role. During his enforced break, Rana underwent intensive recovery to address the knee complaint that cut short his participation in the 2023–24 domestic season and the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
Before the injury, Rana had been a dual threat in limited-overs cricket, combining impactful bowling with lower-order batting. His last international appearance was in the ODI series against New Zealand, where he claimed three wickets and scored a crucial 52 not out in the final match. Across 14 ODIs, the right-arm speedster has maintained an average of 27.38 with the ball, showcasing his ability to chip in with the bat under pressure.

Chennai Final Sets Stage for Whitewash as India Eye Dominance
The third ODI at MA Chidambaram Stadium now serves as a platform for India to conclude the series with authority. While the team has already secured the contest, the match offers an opportunity to test squad depth and rotational strategies. Rana’s inclusion hints at the BCCI’s desire to reintegrate younger talent while maintaining focus on long-term project goals such as the 2027 World Cup.
Team management may opt to rotate players, particularly given Afghanistan’s limited international fixtures. However, the returning pacer’s fitness under international conditions will be closely monitored. India’s current squad includes a mix of seasoned performers and emerging talents for the final clash:
