Stephen Colbert Shaves His Beard on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ After Emmy Wins

Much like David Letterman did before him, Stephen Colbert grew a beard to mark the end of his late-night tenure. The former Late Show host displayed the facial hair at the Emmys, where the series won seven awards, but confessed on Jimmy Kimmel Live that his wife, Evie, dislikes it.

“I was thrilled to win because Evie hates my beard,” Colbert revealed. “She warned me that a beard would reduce our kiss count because it’s prickly. But I told her, ‘If I win an Emmy, you have to kiss me since the camera will be on us.’ I also promised her I’d shave it off if I won.”

“Can we shave it on the show?” Kimmel asked. “I can get some supplies.”

Colbert reluctantly agreed. “That’s rather scandalous, but alright,” he said. “From the neck up, right?”

“Oh no, we’re going all the way,” Kimmel replied. Colbert responded, “By the end of the broadcast, I want to look like an eel.”

The pair discussed Colbert’s upcoming Lord of the Rings film in New Zealand and his extensive suit collection, a gift from after the Late Show ended. They waited until the end of the interview for Colbert to begin trimming the beard with clippers. “This is just like shearing sheep in New Zealand,” Kimmel joked.

Colbert discussed collaborating on Lord of the Rings with his son, Peter McGee, and Philippa Boyens. When asked about working with his son, Colbert said, “He understands screenwriting better than I do. I’m just here because I’m incredibly obsessive about the Lord of the Rings.”

Kimmel also asked if CBS, Colbert’s former network, had congratulated him on his Emmy wins, including Outstanding Variety Series. “I’m not familiar with that organization,” Colbert quipped.

The Late Show wrapped its final season in May, winning seven Emmys for writing, directing, technical direction, lighting, and editing.
