In his latest nighttime TV return, Stipe joined Andrew Watt for the first live performance of their theme track for HBO’s Rooster — a dark comedy starring Steve Carell as a bestselling author turned college professor.
Andrew Watt, known for producing recent projects for the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney, collaborated with the singer on “I Played the Fool,” the show’s central theme. Their recording featured a veteran roster of musicians, including Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and drummer Travis Barker. For the Kimmel iteration, the duo performed with Chad Smith subbing for Barker on drums.
The duo’s progression from studio recording to live performance was seamless, Stipe’s vocals showed enduring strength. His recent transformation — marked by a fuller beard — has also drawn attention, signaling a renewed confidence in both his public role and artistic output.
