Sudan rejected Wednesday a US declaration that the country lacks legitimate governance, as Washington escalates pressure on military chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to accept a ceasefire.
What happened: In a late Wednesday statement, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry strongly rejected the latest State Department position, emphasizing that any peace initiative must proceed from respect for Sudan’s legitimate national institutions.
The ministry also cited engagement with the US-led Quad diplomatic alliance and the 2023 Jeddah peace talks as evidence of its willingness to engage with international mediation.
It added that any such initiative must address “external intervention,” likely referring to the UAE, which Khartoum accuses of backing the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in their war against the Sudanese Armed Forces since April 2023. The UAE denies the allegations.
