Rapid Support Forces allege that the army killed 30 civilians during an assault on Nyala’s bustling livestock market.

The Sudanese army says it has killed dozens of Rapid Support Forces fighters in a series of air raids on Nyala, the southwestern city and capital of South Darfur, while the RSF claims the military’s actions resulted in civilian deaths.
According to the army’s statement, Friday’s operation targeted RSF positions and command centers in Nyala, which also serves as the seat of the paramilitary group’s self‑declared administration.
The RSF countered that a drone strike hit the city’s busy livestock market, claiming 30 civilians were killed, including 17 women and five children.
The group has neither confirmed nor denied whether additional army attacks eliminated some of its fighters or destroyed further command posts.
Human‑rights organization Emergency Lawyers posted on X that a market in Nyala was struck on Friday by a drone “affiliated” with the Sudanese army.
Al Jazeera’s Almigdad Alruhaid reported from Khartoum on Saturday that fighting between the army and RSF has intensified. He cited a government source in South Kordofan indicating that RSF drone attacks targeted mining sites, with clashes escalating across many parts of Sudan in the past 24 hours.
The army has repeatedly used drones to strike the Darfur region in an effort to reclaim territory held by the RSF, which controls most of the area.
This month, Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan, vowed to recover “every inch” of land under RSF control.
The Sudanese civil war, which erupted in 2023, has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The United Nations has labeled the crisis in Sudan the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.
