Tears, anger, and exhaustion marked the conclusion of an inquiry into the devastating fire at Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court, as survivors condemned government departments for deflecting responsibility and demanded accountability and apologies.
An independent committee investigating the Tai Po fire, which claimed 168 lives and displaced approximately 5,000 residents during last November’s blaze, concluded its final hearing on Friday after 30 sessions spanning four months.
Survivors emphasized that the hearings’ end represents only the initial phase of their pursuit of justice. Former Wang Tai House resident Yip Ka-kui, who lost his wife in the fire and testified during the proceedings, stated, “Today is not the final chapter, but the starting point. Only when the committee releases its final report will it be the true beginning of uncovering facts and achieving justice.” Emerging from the final session in tears, Yip described the lead counsel’s closing remarks as unexpectedly moving.
