Sussex clinch season‑ending win against relegated Hampshire

Sussex entered the third morning with a commanding 332‑run lead, aiming to push forward while keeping one eye on a possible Sunday rest.

Sussex batted for just over an hour, with spinners Felix Organ and Andrew Neal delivering all but two overs. They added 103 runs before declaring at 319 for 9, setting Hampshire a daunting chase of 436 to win.

Neal dismissed Jack Leaning, who had scored 78 in the first innings, for 12, and shortly afterwards Haines was trapped lbw by Organ while attempting a sweep to short leg for a fine 130.

Those wickets allowed Jack Carson to unleash his power, smashing 28 runs from only 16 balls, 24 of which came as sixes in successive overs.

First‑innings hero Jaydev Unadkat came into the attack after Sussex felt they had done enough damage, and skipper Haines brought the players off at 11:37 BST.

The Indian left‑armer Unadkat struck on his third delivery, striking Organ on the pads after Nick Gubbins had been dropped at second slip on the previous ball.

Price then bowled Toby Albert out lbw, and finished his second over by removing Tom Prest and Joe Weatherley for ducks, leaving Hampshire reeling at 3 for 4. Loud jeers rose from the crowd when a single took the score to equal the number of wickets fallen.

After lunch Hampshire stood at 26 for 4, and soon fell to 29 for 5 when Ben Brown was caught behind, although Gubbins remained intact having survived a first‑ball chance.

He went on to compile a gritty half‑century with little fanfare, adding 85 runs with 18‑year‑old Ben Mayes for the sixth wicket before both fell quickly to Carson’s spin.

Neal and James Fuller then carried the bat through to tea, displaying the fluency the top order lacked, taking Hampshire to the interval at 192 for 7.

Tom Clark produced another stunning catch to follow his one‑handed grab from day two, dismissing Fuller for 39 as Neal reached his maiden Championship fifty.

Sussex sealed the victory when Neal and Kyle Abbott were both given out lbw by Price, earning him his fifth career five‑wicket haul.
