Swiss Prodigy Manzambi Shines at World Cup, Attracts Premier League Interest

Manzambi began his football journey as a goalkeeper in his youth team, idolising Germany’s Manuel Neuer.

He has since developed into a creative midfielder who loves making forward runs.

His goal‑scoring display against Bosnia‑Herzegovina suggests he could be much more than just a “super‑sub” at this World Cup.

Manzambi broke into Freiburg’s first team last season and helped the German side reach the Europa League final.

He started the final against Aston Villa, and although Freiburg lost 3‑0, rumors linked him with moves to Napoli, Chelsea and Manchester United.

His performance on Thursday at the Los Angeles Stadium indicates that competition for his signature this summer could intensify.

The drama might have been heightened had he taken his side’s 97th‑minute penalty instead of captain Granit Xhaka, who ultimately stepped up.

If Manzambi had scored, he would have become the third‑youngest player to record a World Cup hat‑trick, after 17‑year‑old Pelé in 1958 and 19‑year‑old Edmund Conen in 1934.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea were linked with him in March, and continued strong displays are likely to increase interest.

Commenting on Manzambi’s opening goal for Switzerland, former Crystal Palace forward Clinton Morrison told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It’s a brilliant finish.

Switzerland needed to make changes because they weren’t doing anything; they were dominating possession but weren’t a threat.

It’s a fantastic volley and great technique to give Switzerland the lead.”
