Synchrony Financial (SYF), the credit card issuer for major brands such as Amazon, Walmart, and Lowe’s, has partnered with OpenAI to enable consumers to make purchases directly through ChatGPT using their Synchrony store cards.
The collaboration marks one of the first initiatives by a major U.S. consumer lender to integrate credit, payments, and rewards directly into an AI chatbot. Synchrony is working to embed its private-label cards within ChatGPT, though the integration is anticipated to take several months as it coordinates with retail partners.
The initiative unfolds as OpenAI expands its push into agentic commerce. The company has additionally partnered with Visa and Stripe to support in-chat transactions, while Synchrony explores comparable integrations with Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini.
Synchrony plans to launch a ChatGPT plugin enabling users to browse marketplace deals, promotional financing, and partner offers. The company is also deploying OpenAI’s latest AI models internally to accelerate product development.
