Syrian authorities have detained a cell believed to be responsible for the recent terrorist bombings in Damascus, according to the interior minister.
Two explosions occurred in Damascus on Tuesday while French President Emmanuel Macron was visiting the city.
Interior Minister Anas Khattab announced on Thursday that the cell responsible for the recent terrorist bombings in Damascus is now in custody, according to a statement from the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
He added that authorities will disclose the identities of the cell members, their roles, and all connections once the investigations are completed.
The suspects were apprehended during coordinated raids across four neighborhoods in Damascus and its surrounding countryside.
The two bombs detonated near the Four Seasons Hotel, where President Macron was staying overnight.
The Interior Ministry reported that one device was hidden inside a parked vehicle and the other inside a trash container; both exploded as bomb disposal experts attempted to neutralize them.
President Macron stated that the nation must immediately support the injured, remain steadfast in security measures, and avoid being destabilized.
These bombings mark the latest in a series of security breaches, underscoring the fragile and volatile security environment in Syria following the December 2024 overthrow of Bashar al‑Assad.
The Tuesday attack injured 36 people and coincided with the first visit to Syria by a European Union head of state since the ousting of al‑Assad.
A separate bomb attack at a crowded central Damascus café last week killed nine people. No group has claimed responsibility, though Damascus Governor Maher Marwan said “bad actors” are attempting to destabilize the country.
