DAMASCUS: More than 2.24 million tonnes of goods were transported across Syria and its borders in October, with 172,848 freight vehicles recorded in transit, according to government data.
Khaled Al-Kas’ha, director of the Freight Transport Regulation Directorate, reported that domestic shipments from October 1 to 31 totaled 1,632,344 tonnes, while 611,244 tonnes were transported internationally.
He noted that 152,473 loaded freight trucks operated within Syria during the month, compared with 20,375 trucks that carried goods across borders.
According to Al-Kas’ha, the figures reflect the directorate’s ongoing commitment to monitoring and regulating both domestic and cross-border freight operations.
He emphasized that effective oversight requires continuous tracking of truck movements and cargo weights to ensure compliance, prevent overloading, and protect road infrastructure while maintaining safety and transport efficiency.
Al-Kas’ha stated that during October, the directorate operated 60 roadside monitoring points and deployed 48 fixed and mobile weighbridges to inspect truck weights and enforce load limits.
He added that stronger supervision along freight corridors is vital to safeguard the road network, improve safety, and keep traffic flowing smoothly.
The director also highlighted that regulating freight transport is essential to support commerce and facilitate the efficient movement of goods between Syrian governorates.
He further noted that sector efficiency depends on facilitating trade, meeting market demand, and strengthening Syria’s position in regional transport and transit networks.
The Ministry of Transport, acting through the directorate, continues to oversee freight movement and transport operations to regulate the industry and improve related services.
For the first nine months of the year, total goods transported within and outside Syria reached 25,276,666 tonnes. Domestic shipments accounted for 22,771,640 tonnes, while 2,505,026 tonnes were transported abroad, according to Directorate figures.
