Tactical Shift and Friction: Why Kingsley Coman Misses Out on France’s 2026 World Cup Squad

Kingsley Coman proved to be one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s most impactful partners during the 2025-26 campaign, playing a vital role in Al Nassr securing the Saudi Pro League title. However, despite his immense contributions at the club level, Coman will be a notable omission from the 2026 World Cup.

Seeking to end Ronaldo’s trophy drought, Al Nassr made a statement in the summer transfer window by signing Coman from Bayern Munich. Positioned on the right flank to complement Sadio Mane on the left, Coman quickly established himself as one of the league’s standout performers in his debut season.

Coman recorded 16 goals and 12 assists across 41 appearances, finishing the year as the club’s second-best playmaker and third-highest goalscorer. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (30) and Joao Felix (26) scored more; however, as both operated in central attacking roles, Coman’s output from the wing is particularly impressive.

Reasons for Coman’s World Cup Absence

The winger’s exclusion is the result of a strict tactical direction from manager Didier Deschamps. Despite his elite form throughout the 2025-26 season, Deschamps omitted him during the November international break, and he has not featured for the national team since.

A primary driver for this decision is France’s strategic pivot toward youth on the wings. With Desire Doue and Michael Olise emerging as genuine stars, Deschamps opted to bolster his depth with rising talents such as Bradley Barcola, Rayan Cherki, and Maghnes Akliouche, effectively removing Coman from the rotation.

Reduced playing time and internal tension also played a significant role. In 2024, *The Team* reported that after seeing only 15 minutes of action during the Euros in Germany, Coman felt he had a “miserable experience,” which led him to seriously contemplate international retirement.

After missing the UEFA Nations League Final Four in June 2025, Coman made a brief return to the squad for the September and October windows, featuring in qualifiers against Iceland and Azerbaijan. Ultimately, those appearances were not enough to convince Deschamps, leaving the experienced winger off the final roster for the World Cup.
