DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — The spouse of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan passed away Monday while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar, according to the country’s vice president.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan assumed the role of first gentleman in 2021, when his wife became the nation’s first female president following the death of John Magufuli. He had been undergoing treatment for a cardiac condition.
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the death and offered condolences to the family, stating that burial arrangements were being made in their native Zanzibar, a semiautonomous archipelago within Tanzania.
President Hassan is currently serving her second term after winning a contested 2025 election with over 97% of the vote, amid the barring of candidates from the two main opposition parties.
The couple had four children — three sons and a daughter who serves as a lawmaker.
Kenyan President William Ruto expressed grief on behalf of his government and citizens, writing, “President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son.”
Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye also extended condolences to President Hassan and the people of Tanzania.
