Andrew and Tristan Tate, prominent voices in the online “manosphere” that overlaps with President Donald Trump’s supporter base, were taken into custody in Miami on Saturday. The arrest came over a year after Romanian authorities lifted their travel limits—a move reportedly encouraged by the Trump administration.

Key Facts
U.S. Marshals arrested the Tate brothers to facilitate extradition to the United Kingdom, where they collectively face more than 50 charges, including rape, multiple counts of abusing women, and possession of indecent images of a child.
The brothers departed Romania—where they face comparable allegations and had previously been barred from leaving—in February 2025, after Trump administration officials reportedly pressed Romania to remove Andrew Tate’s travel restrictions, according to the Financial Times, citing anonymous sources.
Romanian foreign minister Emil Hurezeanu acknowledged a conversation on the matter with Trump special envoy Richard Grenell at the February 2025 Munich Security Conference, but Romanian officials stated the U.S. did not exert pressure regarding the decision.
Trump’s eldest son, Don Jr., publicly criticized Andrew Tate’s Romanian detention as “absolute insanity” in a May 2023 post and joined him on a 2024 livestream, remarking, “you’ve got people attacking you as far as I’m concerned.” Trump ally and billionaire Elon Musk also endorsed Andrew Tate’s commentary on U.K. politics in a January 2025 post.
Trump’s youngest son, Barron, similarly developed a rapport with Andrew Tate, assisting with outreach to young male voters during the 2024 campaign, according to multiple reports. A spokesperson for the Tates previously dismissed The New York Times’ reporting on Barron’s links to Andrew as “fake news.”
The Tates have consistently praised Trump and encouraged his supporters to vote for him in 2024. After the 2024 assassination attempt on Trump, Andrew Tate said he spoke with Barron and told reporters, “I’m very close with the Trump family. I know them well.”
Crucial Quote
Trump has said little about the Tates. When Romanian travel restrictions were lifted, he stated he knew “nothing about that,” adding, “we’ll check it out. We’ll let you know.”
Chief Critic
An attorney for the brothers asserted their innocence and claimed the U.K. breached an agreement with Romania that allegedly barred British authorities from seeking extradition while Romanian cases remained active.
What To Watch For
The Tate brothers are scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami next week.
Tangent
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has opposed the Tates and launched a state criminal investigation in March following their arrival in Florida. The Department of Homeland Security’s anti-trafficking agents have also reportedly investigated them for years per The New York Times, though federal officials have not confirmed any probe.
Key Background
The brothers, holding dual U.S. and U.K. citizenship, were charged after numerous new counts were added to last year’s allegations. Andrew Tate faces 42 charges and Tristan Tate 17, mostly alleging abuse of women near London between 2010 and 2017. They were first arrested in Romania in 2022 on human trafficking, rape, and criminal gang charges for sexual exploitation. They also face civil suits in both countries. Self-described misogynists, they advocate treating women as property. Andrew Tate has called himself a “pimp” and created a program teaching followers to recruit women into “sexual slavery.”
