PATTAYA, Thailand — Thailand’s coastal resort city of Pattaya, historically associated with sex tourism, is set to welcome sailors and Marines from the USS Abraham Lincoln for their shore leave this week following the vessel’s extended deployment in the Middle East.
Located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Bangkok, Pattaya will host the Lincoln’s 5,000-member strike group for rest and recuperation, aligning with common shore leave patterns during regional naval exercises with Thai forces.
The crew’s visit coincides with local economic benefits from tourism, as shore leave spending supports hospitality and service sectors. U.S. military personnel often engage in community outreach, including medical care and volunteer work at local orphanages.
To manage the influx, Navy Shore Patrol personnel collaborate with Thai police to maintain order, while military personnel are reminded of applicable laws regarding local conduct and U.S. military regulations.
Pattaya’s history dates back to the Vietnam War era when U.S. military presence fostered nightlife growth, later evolving amid economic shifts and international tourism trends. Recent infrastructure developments highlight family-oriented attractions like themed parks, botanical gardens, and cultural landmarks, reflecting the city’s rebranding efforts.
