Even minimal nighttime light exposure—ranging from moonlight to light seeping through a door gap—can negatively impact cardiovascular health, according to a recent study published in the European Heart Journal.

“Exposure to higher levels of light at nighttime is linked to cardiac remodelling,” said Lu Qi from Tulane University in New Orleans, USA, who led the research in a press release. “This is where the structure and function of the heart changes, typically in response to chronic stress or injury to the heart.”
While this represents the body’s attempt to adapt to chronic stress, “ultimately it weakens the heart and can lead to heart failure,” Qi explained.
Consequently, keeping bedrooms as dark as possible “should be considered as one of the potential strategies for preventing heart disease by clinicians and policy makers,” Qi asserted.
The study analyzed data from 11,071 participants who were exposed to varying levels of light overnight for one week, ranging from near-total darkness to light equivalent to a low-brightness phone screen or light filtering through a cracked door.
Three years later, participants underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging to assess potential changes in the structure and function of their hearts.
The findings revealed that participants exposed to the highest levels of nighttime light experienced thickening of the walls of the left heart chamber, which reduced the space inside the ventricle. Additionally, there were signs of reduced heart flexibility during contraction—an early marker of cardiac dysfunction.
“Darkness deserves recognition as a vital sign, as essential to cardiovascular health as blood pressure control and clean air,” wrote Professor Thomas Münzel from the University Medical Center Mainz, Germany, and colleagues in an accompanying editorial.
They urged clinicians to actively inquire about patients’ sleep environments, asking “how dark the bedroom is, whether the patient works night shifts, and how much screen use occurs after sunset.” They recommended utilizing blackout curtains, warm-colored bedside lamps, and covering small standby LEDs on household electronics.
Municipalities also have a critical role to play, as light pollution represents “one of the few environmental hazards that cities can control directly and affordably,” they noted. They suggested implementing shielded fixtures, warm-spectrum bulbs, and dimming or motion-activated streetlights as “energy-efficient and climate-friendly” methods to decrease unnecessary light exposure.
