As Europe prepares for another intense heatwave, there’s a growing surge in travelers seeking cooler climates. The “alpine summer” trend, which involves spending warm-weather months in mountainous regions instead of traditional coastal destinations, is gaining significant traction. This shift reflects a broader movement toward “coolcationing,” “heat-proof holidays,” and “climate-smart travel” choices.
New data from Google Trends reveals an 82% increase in searches for alpine summer getaways, indicating a strong preference among tourists to trade crowded beaches for milder temperatures, scenic trails, and alpine lakes. A recent European Travel Commission report further supports this trend, showing that 15% of respondents prioritize “pleasant, stable weather” when selecting destinations, second only to safety concerns. Mountain holiday specialist Heidi has responded by expanding its offerings to 46 resorts across Europe, including new additions in Switzerland and Andorra.
Cooler Destination Alternatives
“High-altitude mountain resorts still enjoy summer sunshine but remain significantly cooler than Mediterranean coastal areas,” explains Marcus Blunt, Co-Founder of Heidi. “They offer a perfect blend of outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, and exploration without the discomfort of extreme heat.”
For those considering an alpine escape, Heidi recommends several alternatives:
Arinsal in the Pyrenees (Andorra): Replacing Spain’s Costa del Sol (30°C+ summers) with this mountain village at 1,550 meters, where temperatures average in the low 20s. Visitors can explore Comapedrosa Nature Park while enjoying a refreshing climate.
Selva di Val Gardena (Italy): The Dolomites are emerging as a top choice for travelers avoiding southern Italy’s 29-30°C heat. At 1,563 meters, this area offers 18-21°C summer temperatures and serves as an alpine haven for hikers and food enthusiasts.
Pertisau on Lake Achensee (Austria): A prime spot for watersports enthusiasts, Pertisau provides a cooler alternative to Greece’s Vasiliki. With summer temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s, the lake is ideal for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
