Furthermore, it redirects focus toward enhancing Bitcoin’s utility as a medium of exchange.

Designed for a one-year trial period, BIP-110 includes provisions for refinement or extension based on community feedback. Advocates argue that it curbs data bloat, which they view as burdensome to node operators and a wasteful use of network resources.

Overall, BIP-110 aims to uphold Bitcoin’s core function as digital money, aligning with the vision outlined by pseudonymous cryptographer Satoshi Nakamoto in the foundational Bitcoin whitepaper published in October 2008.

Supporters assert that BIP-110’s implementation does not interfere with existing monetary applications, ensuring continued functionality while preventing the blockchain from becoming a generic data repository.

Under BIP-110, non-financial data—including ordinal inscriptions—would face restrictions for a duration of one year.

Satoshi’s Perspective on Embedded Data in Bitcoin

A historical discussion involving Bitcoin’s creator recently resurfaced amid rising interest in BIP-110. Satoshi emphasized that Bitcoin’s ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) serves solely for transaction signing, not message encryption. He cautioned against embedding plaintext messages permanently on-chain, deeming such practices risky and unnecessary.

Instead, Satoshi advocated for external systems operating alongside the blockchain, suggesting users authenticate messages with their Bitcoin keys when verification is needed.

Advocates often reference this exchange to support BIP-110’s principles.

Major Concerns Regarding BIP-110

Upon release, BIP-110 faced strong resistance, notably from Strategy Executive Chairman and Blockstream CEO Adam Back. They argued that the proposal threatens Bitcoin’s foundational ethos.

Michael Saylor, head of the largest corporate treasury firm, contended that BIP-110 compromises the economic liberties Bitcoin was designed to protect, likening it to fiat-style monetary controls.

Back, frequently cited in debates about Satoshi’s identity, characterized BIP-110 as regressive. He noted that users might circumvent these limitations, yet the harm to innovation could prove irreversible.

Back underscored that Bitcoin thrives on its unwavering adherence to neutral, transparent governance. He dismissed BIP-110 as “a spam filter that doesn’t even filter spam.”

BIP-110 Activation Triggers Limited Adoption

On Saturday, Bitcoin achieved block height 961,632, marking the anticipated activation of BIP-110.

Despite this milestone, only 2.53% of blocks signaled support for the update—far below the 55% threshold required for network-wide adoption. In response, a user-activated soft fork (UASF) emerged, prompting the minority chain to reject blocks lacking support for its contentious anti-spam protocols.

AntPool became the first miner to produce a block following BIP-110’s rollout. While most full nodes validated the block successfully, members of the minority chain contested it.

In contrast, the minority chain accepted a block from Ocean’s Roughnecks Mining Pool, leading to an alternate UASF chain. The same pool mined another block shortly after, though their success proved fleeting.

Kucoin reported that node adoption rates for BIP-110 hover between 2% and 8%, reflecting waning miner enthusiasm. The BIP-110 dashboard corroborates this trend, showing consistently low signaling metrics amid apparent miner dissent.

This left the smaller chain—backed by limited hash power—struggling against targets calibrated for the entire global network.

Additionally, the episode illustrates that while individual node runners possess sovereignty over their configurations, success hinges on securing sufficient mining power or economic backing. Otherwise, they risk isolation on a stalled branch.

Finally, Bitcoin’s refusal to adopt coercive data restrictions reinforces its role as an open, trustless settlement layer. Transactions complying with cryptographic standards and fee models remain unaffected by subjective content evaluations.

Why BIP-110 Lacks Influence

Conversely, BIP-110’s shortcomings expose its inherent irrelevance within Bitcoin’s incentive framework. As Back noted, imposing restrictions on arbitrary data at the consensus layer proves ineffective. Users can encode any information into standard transaction structures like public keys, multisig scripts, or taproot leaves—as long as fees are paid.

Ordinal inscriptions significantly boost mining revenue, making outright prohibition unlikely. According to Saylor, restricting such activity conflicts with Bitcoin’s ethos of unrestricted peer-to-peer value transfer.

Additionally, BIP-110’s swift failure underscores its disconnect from real-world utility. Its branch stalled rapidly due to challenging difficulty adjustments, leaving mainnet operations—including fees, transaction times, and block production—intact.

Importantly, the event had no measurable effect on BTC’s price, underscoring its minimal influence on core market dynamics.
