Originating from the Midlands with strong cricket roots in Hampshire through Steve Davies’ Minor Counties career, Ben Davies was introduced to the sport at Havant Cricket Club during their father’s playing era in the 1980s and 90s.
Windsor, three years the elder, mentored Davies through junior cricket before both played competitively in Hampshire and Southern Vipers first teams.
“There exist passionate cricket enthusiasts who vocalize their opinions enthusiastically. Davies engages differently – maintaining composed observation,” Windsor notes. “She consumes substantial cricket content without overt commentary or intrusion.”
Established as an England age-group representative, Davies broke into county cricket at age 15 during Charlotte Edwards’ final Hampshire tenure, creating an overlap between emerging leadership and established expertise.
“Her exceptional cricket perception forms her foundational strength,” observes Windsor. “This cricketing intelligence explains the leadership designation.”
The mentorship began when Davies was a reserved 10-year-old; fatefully, Edwards presented Davies’ inaugural England cap at 20 during the 2021 Vipers season when Edwards coached the club.
While rapid progress precluded captaincy roles in youth pathways and county teams, Davies gained leadership experience through two London Spirit Hundred seasons when Heather Knight’s injury created unexpected opportunity.
Selected ahead of experienced alternatives Beth Mooney (Australia) and Melie Kerr (New Zealand), Davies demonstrated decisive leadership qualities. As then Spirit coach Trevor Griffin recalls, “Charlie possessed established team respect, proven cricket understanding, and effective interpersonal connections.”
“The selection prioritized Davies’ inherent curiosity about cricket mechanics and format mastery combined with grassroots group cohesion, rather than mere tenure-based experience.”
