Andrew and Tristan Tate have been held in federal custody in Florida since July, awaiting the outcome of an extradition request from the British authorities over criminal charges of rape, assault and sex trafficking.
The brothers, prominent figures in the so-called manosphere, are actively challenging the request. They have consistently denied the allegations and maintain that their arrest is politically motivated.
A federal judge in Miami is scheduled to consider on Thursday whether the Tates should remain in custody as they contest their extradition.
The hearing represents the latest development in more than a decade of controversy that has led to criminal investigations in multiple countries.

Around 2015
Origins in Webcam Business
In the early 2010s, Andrew Tate and his brother began operating an online pornography business together, in which women performed live on webcams for paying customers. By 2015, they were running the operation in areas around Luton, a town near London where the brothers, who hold U.S.-British dual citizenship, settled after leaving the United States as children.
Both brothers had achieved success as professional kickboxers, but it was the webcam business, Andrew later stated in interviews, that generated their real wealth. The brothers, he explained, romanced attractive women, persuaded them into performing, and took most of the profits.
2016-2022
Reality TV and a Move to Romania
Andrew Tate appeared on the British reality show “Big Brother.” His time on the program was brief, as he was removed after The Sun, a British tabloid, obtained a video of him whipping a girlfriend with a belt. Both parties stated the act was consensual.
The controversy amplified his public profile, particularly on social media, where Mr. Tate expressed misogynistic views about women, displayed ostentatious wealth, and announced his support for Donald J. Trump’s MAGA movement.
During this period, the brothers relocated their base, along with some of their webcam operations, to Romania.
They also began selling self-help courses and access to a private network, promising to teach young men about entrepreneurship, dating, and fitness.
Substantial wealth followed. In the eight years leading up to 2022, a court in Britain found, the brothers generated at least 21 million British pounds in revenue (approximately $28 million) from adult entertainment platforms and online payments.
2022
Peak Fame and Social Media Bans
Growing interest in Andrew Tate attracted millions of social media followers, making him one of the most searched individuals on Google globally.
Teachers and advocacy groups raised concerns about the influence of Mr. Tate’s views on young students.
That summer, Meta, YouTube, and TikTok removed his accounts, citing violations of their policies. He had previously been banned from Twitter but returned to the platform after Elon Musk acquired it in October.
A widely shared exchange in December between Andrew Tate and climate activist Greta Thunberg brought him additional attention.
Prosecutors in Romania detained the brothers, accusing them of forming an organized criminal group and trafficking seven women into their pornography operation. Andrew Tate faced an additional accusation of rape.
The brothers denied the allegations, claiming that their wealth and fame had made them targets.
2023
Defamation Lawsuits and Indictment
The Tates were formally indicted in June, initially confined to jail and later placed under house arrest. They were subsequently released but prohibited from leaving Romania.
The case generated headlines worldwide, and the brothers gave interviews to sympathetic conservative commentators, including Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens.
They also filed a defamation lawsuit against a woman in Florida who was identified as a victim in the Romanian investigation.
British prosecutors applied for arrest warrants for the brothers on allegations of rape, human trafficking, and assault.
A Romanian court agreed to extradite them to Britain once the Romanian legal proceedings concluded.
The charges, which were not fully detailed at the time by prosecutors, covered a period from 2012 to 2015.
At this stage, Andrew faced 10 charges, including rape, assault causing actual bodily harm, human trafficking, and controlling prostitution for gain related to three women.
Tristan faced 11 charges, including rape, actual bodily harm, and human trafficking related to one woman. A spokesman for the brothers said they rejected the charges.
June 2024
Civil Lawsuit Filed Against Andrew Tate
Expanding their legal challenges, four British women filed a civil lawsuit against Andrew Tate.
They alleged that he abused them from 2013 to 2015, when he was residing in Britain. One woman who had worked for him stated in court documents that he strangled her during sex; another claimed he raped, beat, and pointed a gun at her; a third alleged he raped and strangled her while they were in a relationship.
Mr. Tate, in both court filings and public statements, denied all accusations against him and asserted that his interactions with the women were consensual.
Late 2024
New Criminal Case Emerges in Romania
Romanian prosecutors announced a second criminal investigation into the brothers, this time accusing them of coercing 34 women into their online pornography business.
One of the victims, prosecutors said, was 17 years old. Andrew Tate was also accused of beating and having sex with a 15-year-old.
In December, in a setback for prosecutors, a judge blocked a trial in Romania in the first criminal case, citing procedural errors and other issues.
February 2025
Travel Restrictions Lifted
In February, the brothers traveled by private jet to Florida after Romanian prosecutors lifted travel restrictions on them.
A New York Times investigation revealed that Trump administration officials played a crucial role in facilitating their departure from Romania. President Trump stated at the time that he had no knowledge of the matter.
Their arrival created divisions among American conservatives. Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida declared that the Tates were not welcome in the state. Shortly afterward, the state’s attorney general announced a criminal investigation into the brothers, without specifying its focus.
Mid-2025
Additional Allegations Surface
Brianna Stern, a model who dated Andrew Tate, accused him in a civil complaint filed in Los Angeles County of choking and beating her.
A few months later, in July, Lauren Southern, a former right-wing influencer, alleged in a self-published memoir that Mr. Tate choked and assaulted her in 2018 when the two met in Romania.
Mr. Tate, through his lawyers, denied both claims. He subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit against Ms. Stern.
July 18, 2026
Federal Detention in Florida
Federal marshals arrested the Tate brothers in Miami at the request of British prosecutors, who issued new criminal charges of rape and sex trafficking against them.
For Andrew Tate, the new charges include seven counts of rape; three counts of sex trafficking; three counts of assault; 15 counts relating to sexual images of children; and four counts relating to possession of “extreme pornography.”
Tristan Tate faces two counts of rape; one count of sexual assault; and three counts of sex trafficking. The charges relate to a period from 2010 to 2017 and involve four victims, according to British prosecutors.
Lawyers for the brothers are seeking their release on bail, arguing that they complied with restrictions in Britain and would respect the U.S. legal process as well.
British prosecutors, however, maintain that the brothers pose a flight risk and should remain incarcerated.
