Manager Thomas Tuchel delivered an emotional address to the England squad, urging them to conclude their World Cup campaign with a strong performance following their dramatic semi-final defeat to Argentina.
After returning to their Kansas City base on Wednesday, the team will undergo two final training sessions in preparation for Saturday’s bronze medal match against France.
Sources reported that Tuchel emphasized the importance of moving past the heartbreak of the 2-1 loss and focusing on finishing the tournament positively.
A victory over France would mark England’s best World Cup result since their historic 1966 triumph.
Tuchel praised the squad’s resilience, highlighting their achievement in reaching only their fourth World Cup semi-final in history.
The relationship between the 52-year-old coach and his players has become a focal point after Argentina’s late comeback, with two stoppage-time goals overcoming England’s early lead.
Reports indicated that several players expressed frustration regarding defensive instructions during the match, which saw England retreat into a back-five formation late in the game.
Tuchel later clarified that the tactical shift was not part of the original game plan, stating it was “not in our DNA to control the game and the ball.”
He is expected to address questions about the match strategy during the pre-game press conference ahead of the France clash, scheduled to begin at 0030 BST on Saturday.
The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager, who extended his contract to 2028, continues to enjoy the backing of the Football Association as he prepares for the 2028 European Championship, to be hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.
