At least three individuals lost their lives during the World Cup celebrations in Mexico City, after thousands of soccer fans gathered in the streets overnight to mark their national team’s victory over Ecuador, according to city officials.
A 44‑year‑old man and two women, aged 19 and 48, were discovered unconscious in the Colonia Juárez neighborhood near the city center, the city’s public health secretary reported. Subsequent examinations confirmed that all three died from asphyxiation, officials said.
Local media reported that a burst of celebratory fireworks following the match sparked a brief panic, leading crowds to rush and tumble in the surrounding side streets.
Emergency personnel administered CPR to the three victims, who were subsequently declared dead at nearby hospitals, authorities reported.
The victims were located in side streets surrounding the Angel of Independence monument on Paseo de la Reforma, an area where thousands of fans had gathered after Mexico’s victory over Ecuador secured their place in the World Cup round of 16.
Footage and photographs from the scene captured throngs of people gathered around the monument, turning the area into a hub of exuberant celebration.
