Three Ottawa Senators in Need of Immediate Focus This Season

As the Ottawa Senators prepare for the upcoming NHL season, several key players are expected to elevate their performance to help the team compete in the challenging Atlantic Division. While the roster retains many core elements from last season, specific individuals must demonstrate significant progress to ensure the team’s success. This includes young talents and established stars who have the potential to redefine their roles.

Among the players under scrutiny is Fabian Zetterlund, a physical forward whose offensive output has not met expectations despite a $4.275 million annual contract. Zetterlund has shown defensive reliability and work ethic, finishing fourth on the team in hits last season. However, his point production has been inconsistent, with only five points in 20 games during his initial tenure and 33 points last season. His lack of scoring in the playoffs, including 10 consecutive games without a point, has raised concerns about his ability to contribute meaningfully. To regain trust, Zetterlund must prove his scoring capabilities, particularly when paired with offensive threats like William Eklund or Tim Stutzle.

Linus Ullmark, the Senators’ goaltender, also faces expectations after a mixed playoff performance. While his .932 save percentage and 2.03 goals-against average in the playoffs were commendable, his regular-season performance has been inconsistent. Ullmark posted a .910 save percentage and struggled against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2025 first round, surrendering three-plus goals in five games. His 35-day absence last season and early-season regression further highlight the need for stability. The Senators will rely on Ullmark to maintain his playoff form, as a decline could jeopardize the team’s postseason chances.

Jordan Spence, a 25-year-old defenseman, is another player expected to rise. After a standout 2024-25 season with 31 points and a plus-15 rating, Spence is likely to be given top-four minutes alongside Thomas Chabot. His chemistry with Chabot last season, which yielded a strong expected goals percentage, positions him as a key piece for the team’s defensive strategy. However, maintaining consistency in both defensive and offensive play will be critical. Spence’s ability to avoid early-season mishaps and sustain his performance throughout the season will determine his value to the roster.
