Tilda Swinton will make her New York stage debut this winter in Manfred Karge’s Man to Man.

The solo show will play the Lucille Lortel Theatre beginning Feb. 21, 2027, with previews leading to an opening night on Feb. 28. The strictly limited eight-week engagement will conclude in April 2027. Swinton originally originated the role in 1987.

The Academy Award-winning actress is currently performing the role at London’s Royal Court Theatre, marking her first return to the stage since the original production. This revival will also play limited runs at Scotland’s Traverse Theatre and with the Berliner Ensemble in Germany before arriving in New York.

Set in 1930s Germany, the play follows a woman who assumes her deceased husband’s identity, living as Ella/Max as the nation undergoes dramatic transformation through war and dictatorship. The production originated at the Traverse Theatre, which commissioned the original 1987 staging before it transferred to the Royal Court in 1988.

This revival reunites the original creative team with direction by Stephen Unwin, design by Bunny Christie, and translation by Anthony Vivis, with revisions by Unwin. Additional design contributions include lighting by Ben Ormerod, sound by Elena Peña, and projections by Matt Powell.

Swinton won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2007 for her performance in Michael Clayton. Her extensive filmography includes The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Burn After Reading, Orlando, and multiple collaborations with director Wes Anderson, such as Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City.

Brian and Dayna Lee, The Royal Court Theatre, Berliner Ensemble, and Madison Wells Live are producing.
