Tokio Marine has become the first Japanese nonlife insurer to introduce coverage specifically designed for artificial intelligence-enabled robots, marking a significant milestone in the adaptation of insurance products to emerging automation technologies.
The new policy addresses the unique liability and operational risks associated with autonomous machines equipped with AI capabilities, including property damage, business interruption, and third-party liability arising from robotic decision-making processes.
As Japanese manufacturers and service providers accelerate deployment of intelligent robotics across factories, warehouses, and customer-facing environments, traditional insurance frameworks have struggled to account for the complex interplay between software algorithms and physical machinery.
Tokio Marine’s offering reflects a broader industry shift toward specialized risk products that match the evolving technological landscape, positioning the insurer at the forefront of a market expected to expand significantly alongside Japan’s robotics ambitions.
