Tom Aspinall relinquishes UFC Heavyweight Crown After Persistent Eye Injury

UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has relinquished his title due to persistent complications from an eye injury suffered in his fight against Ciryl Gane last year, according to the British athlete.

“I had already committed to a fight date, was back in sparring, feeling strong and prepared to compete, when an accident exacerbated the damage to my right eye,” Aspinall posted on Instagram on Monday.

“This means I will be sidelined for an extended period, and at this stage, I cannot predict when I might return.”

Since sustaining severe eye pokes during his title defense versus Gane in Abu Dhabi last October, the 33‑year‑old has undergone several surgeries. The bout was subsequently declared a first‑round no‑contest after Aspinall could not continue.

Aspinall explained that he chose to vacate the belt instead of holding up the division while he recuperates.

His exit opens the path for Ciryl Gane, who secured the interim heavyweight crown with a win over Alex Pereira in June, to be promoted to undisputed champion.

Although he has given up the title, Aspinall emphasized that he is not retiring and remains eager to return to competition.

“Giving up the title does not mean I am leaving the sport or abandoning my dream,” he wrote.

“I will keep doing everything I can to heal, obtain medical clearance, and return to competition as soon as possible.”
