Essex captain Tom Westley has resigned following a challenging season, with the club still facing potential relegation from the County Championship’s first division.
At 37, Westley is Essex’s longest-serving player, having come through the academy in 2003. He was named captain in January 2020 after Ryan ten Doeschate stood down following the club’s 2019 double-winning season.
He initially found success, leading the side to the Bob Willis Trophy in 2020—a competition that replaced the County Championship during the Covid pandemic—and became the club’s all-time leading run-scorer in One Day Cup history in 2025.
However, this season proved far more challenging. Essex lost five of six Championship matches between June and September, and were heading for defeat in their final game against Glamorgan before rain curtailed play on the last day.
The team finished eighth in Division One, 25 points above the second relegation spot, but must wait for the outcome of Leicestershire’s appeal against their 27-point penalty for a poor pitch during last month’s match against Glamorgan.“Captaining Essex has been, and always will be, my greatest honour,” Westley stated. “It has been a privilege to serve this club, and I am disheartened that I could not leave it in a stronger position.
“Personally, I believe my primary value lies in scoring runs and helping Essex secure victories, something I failed to do this year. Therefore, I feel this is the right moment for a change and for the club to pursue a new direction.
“This is an all-encompassing role that has been demanding, particularly this season, for which I take responsibility. No one is more disappointed by the second-half results than I am.
“I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout my career. To the Members, supporters, past and current players, and coaching staff, I am forever indebted to you all.
“Above all, I want to thank my family, who have shared the highs and lows with me. Thank you.”
Chris Silverwood, Essex’s director of cricket, said: “We would like to thank Tom for his time as Club Captain. For six years, he led Essex Cricket with immense pride, passion, and commitment, and we are grateful for his dedication both on and off the field.
“Tom has been an important leader during his captaincy, and we thank him for his dedication and contribution.”
“A new captain will be announced in due course.”
