Tomb Raider: Catalyst Release Window Pushed to 2028

The upcoming Tomb Raider installment, titled Catalyst, has quietly received a delay, with its release now slated for 2028.

Catalyst was one of two Tomb Raider projects unveiled at The Game Awards last December. During that announcement, Crystal Dynamics indicated a release schedule that placed their remake of the original Lara Croft adventure in 2026, followed by the new story-driven Catalyst in 2027. Both upcoming titles will feature the acclaimed actress Alix Wilton Regan as the voice of Lara Croft.

“With Tomb Raider: Catalyst, we are crafting our most expansive and innovative Tomb Raider adventure to date, while Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis allows us to revisit the series’ origins through a modern lens,” stated Crystal Dynamics head Scot Amos.

However, last month, Crystal Dynamics confirmed that the Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis remake has been rescheduled for February 12, 2027, though no specific reason for the postponement was provided.

It has now been confirmed that the launch of Catalyst has also been delayed. In an interview with The Game Business, Jeffrey Gattis, Amazon’s head of gaming, noted: “We have announced two Tomb Raider titles: Atlantis arrives on February 12th next year, and we will follow that up in 2028 with the next installment.” No official explanation for this second delay was offered.

According to the game’s official description, “Tomb Raider: Catalyst represents a bold new direction for the franchise, following Lara Croft on an adventure through Northern India. Tomb Raider: Catalyst is set in the aftermath of a mythical cataclysm that has unearthed ancient secrets and awakened mysterious guarding forces. As elite treasure hunters descend upon the region, Lara must race to uncover truths hidden beneath a fractured landscape to prevent those seeking power from causing a catastrophe. As the ancient and modern worlds collide, Lara must navigate a complex web of rivals and allies to protect a secret that could reshape the future.”

Separately, a live-action Tomb Raider adaptation is currently in development at Amazon Prime Video. Sophie Turner, cast as Lara Croft, recently mentioned that her commitment to the series will keep her busy for several years. She noted that her portrayal will move away from the “sex bombshell” trope, focusing instead on the character’s depth and capability. “I really want to show the other side. She’s so unashamedly capable. She is not a woman who hides her strengths at all,” Turner remarked.

In other gaming news, the developers behind God of War have confirmed that the new spin-off, Laufey, will launch next year, with a Kratos-centered sequel to follow.
