Tomljanovic Reflects on Historic Victory Over Serena Williams Ahead of Potential Return]
Williams competed fiercely in the first set before allowing four consecutive games to slip away, ultimately falling in a tight tie-break. Despite leading 4-0 in the second set, she struggled to maintain her advantage as Tomljanovic mounted a determined comeback.
In the decisive third set, Tomljanovic capitalised on Williams’ diminishing form to secure victory. Following the match, Tomljanovic paid tribute to her opponent, stating: “I’m feeling really sorry because I love Serena just as much as you guys do. What she’s done for me, for tennis, is incredible. She is the greatest of all time.”
While Williams did not commit to a potential comeback during her post-match interview, she confirmed her intention to return to competition at Queen’s Club in London, where she will team with 19-year-old Victoria Mboko for the women’s doubles event.
Williams’ older sister Venus, who continues to compete on the WTA Tour, recently reached the quarter-finals of the 2025 US Open women’s doubles at the age of 45.
Tomljanovic suggested that Williams may be motivated by her sister’s continued success, noting: “I don’t think Serena will come back and be satisfied with making the second week. Even her last US Open, I think in her mind she was going to win it, so she must be feeling some sort of extra boost of energy. Maybe she’s inspired by Venus.”
